Saying Goodbye to Cirrus

Apr 2, 2012   //   by Melissa Coon   //   Blog, Family Life  //  2 Comments

It’s with a heavy heart that I write this post today.  We had to say goodbye to our beloved cat of sixteen years and big part of our family, Cirrus.  A deep sadness overwhelms me as I learn to deal with her being gone.

She fell ill to a disease called Hepatic Lipidosis commonly known as Fatty Liver. She beat the odds two years ago and made a full recovery, but sadly this time she lost the fight.

We know in our hearts she will go on to be with our family and friends who have since passed on. We strongly believe in our faith and know that God will reunite us again someday.  Until then we found comfort in a poem that was given to us by a close family friend that was called:

The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Cleo our other cat knew that something was wrong with Cirrus. It was rare that the two cats chilled together like this.

These photos were taken this morning before we had to say good bye.

Cirrus will always be in our hearts forever and missed more than any words I can think of composing :(

  • My cat’s name was Kutu. We were like friends linked spiritually. He was one of my family member. Every afternoon we did sit together and gazed at each other with utmost affection. I miss him very much as you miss Cirrus. :(

  • Thank you for your kind words. Sorry to hear you share the same loss with Kutu. I never knew it would be this hard. It’s been two years now, we think about Cirrus daily and miss more and more every day.
